MessageLabs Small Business Survey Results, Vanson Bourne March 29, 2007
Recent research conducted by Vanson Bourne, on behalf of MessageLabs, reveals that security breaches are most often caused by junior sales men and women between the ages of 26-35 years old, who are tech savvy and multi-task with applications such as email, instant messenger, VoIP, and the web without realizing the potential dangers of dividing their concentration levels so thin. Less than half of US businesses provide adequate security training for their employees. Without proper protection, organizations are turning their best assets into IT security risks which could cause sudden and unexpected breaches.

MessageLabs Intelligence: Q3 2007 A Downpour of Virus & Phishing Activity, In the Wake of a Storm Worm Surge
Virus and phishing rates have recently taken a back seat in favor of the more turbulent and escalating spam activities. Virus levels reached levels last observed more than eighteen months ago. Phishing levels have never before reached levels experienced this month. As this new academic year began, so did the increase in “old school” threats.
Further analysis into virus activities highlights that the cyber-criminals are favoring the method of including links to malicious websites hosting the malware code, rather than attaching the malware to the email itself through an executable attachment.
One name which still needs to be associated and acknowledged for the increase in virus levels is the Storm botnet, a name which is likely to be prevalent in all retrospective threat reviews of 2007.
The increase in phishing activity in the run-up to the holiday season is largely down to an increase in the intensity and volume of attacks at some major targets. These attacks are often sustained over a period of days before shifting focus to another target.

SMBs in a Connected World: Business Success Means Facing New IT Security Threats
New global research conducted by IDC and sponsored by MessageLabs and McAfee, reveals that the majority of small and medium sized businesses (SMBs) believe an IT security breach would be detrimental in achieving their business priorities, however few are overtly proactive in their fight against infringements due to resource restrictions through other business related priorities. IDC found that 80 percent of the 450 SMB IT decision makers interviewed feared an IT security threat, such as an email virus, however a proactive approach is prohibited through senior SMB IT professionals being more ‘business-orientated’ than enterprise CIOs and thus tending to be highly involved in the company’s daily business achievement. The IDC research indicates that company size plays an important role in the way that senior management views security.
